Drawing Out Ideas, Thoughts & Feelings of Others by REFLECTING THEIR QUESTION or STATEMENT

Reflecting means repeating what the person said back to them in your own words, preceded by something like “What I hear you saying (asking) is….” The person can then think, and perhaps respond to you, with “Yes, you got it,” “No, you missed it,” or “Not quite.” Usually the reflection makes the person feel connected with you, so they proceed to spill out more information.

Now you don’t have to reflect everything they say; use this communications technique at the start of a conversation to more quickly get to what is really on their mind.  Sometimes a person throws out a trial balloon to see if you are receptive. Maybe they are formulating thoughts and have not yet found the right subject.  Maybe they are an extrovert putting their mouth in gear before their mind. You can save time and get to a speaker’s real interest faster if you reflect their first one or two questions or statements.
